One of my favourite things to do on the weekend, especially on Sunday nights, is a really indulgent skincare routine. You can have the most expensive, top-notch makeup products on the market, but if you’re not taking care of your skin, they’re not going to perform the way you want. My skin is always a good barometer of my overall health, especially my diet, stress level, and sleep habits. Taking care of your skin is taking care of yourself so that’s why I’ve chosen to do the ‘best of skincare’ tag for this week’s Self Care Sunday post. This tag started on YouTube, but since I’m a blogger, not a vlogger, I thought I’d adapt it. I’d love to read your answers in the comments below!
WHAT’S YOUR SKIN TYPE?
Dry. So, so dry. I used to have normal/combination skin, but since entering my 30s my face has essentially become a desert. I also drink a lot of coffee (there are worse vices to have, I suppose) and am not the best at drinking water so I’d say my skin is not only dry, but dehydrated. *Note to self: drink more water*
HOW DO YOU STORE YOU SKINCARE PRODUCTS?
I store my products in the bathroom under my sink. I have two small baskets – one for products I use in the morning and one for at night. I know there are lots of skin care gurus who say you shouldn’t keep your skin care products in the bathroom, but let’s be real. That’s where skincare happens!
Hyaluronic acid. As a dry-skinned gal, my face loves anything with this ingredient in it. Hyaluronic acid is a humectant meaning it pulls moisture out of the air and into your skin. I’m currently using the Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 ($6.80 CAD) in the morning and at night.
MOST INDULGENT PRODUCT?
I’ve picked Harlow Skin Co.’s Youth Dew Face Elixir because of the price tag ($72 CAD) and the way it feels. I love this face oil so much. A mix of floral extracts, this stuff seriously hydrates my skin and makes it feel amazing. You can use it morning and night, but I tend to stick with it as part of my evening skincare routine.
DO YOU USE ANY TOOLS?
The only ‘tools’ I use are reusable makeup remover pads. These super soft bamboo squares were gifted to me by my aunt and I absolutely love them. They don’t leave any fluff behind and are environmentally friendly which is a plus. You can find a similar product here.
I have more than a few masks in my rotation, but when I want my skin to look great I reach for the Paula’s Choice Radiance Renewal Mask. It’s an overnight skin brightening mask that actually delivers noticeable results after one use.
I love cake beauty‘s the Everything Balm ($16 CAD) for, well, everything. I keep a tube of this in my desk. It’s great for dry or chapped lips, as a cheekbone highlight. I’ve also been known to use it to moisturize my cuticles, tame my brows, and control flyaways. This is definitely more of an on-the-go product than something I use specifically every day, but it’s a life (skin?) saver.
IF YOU HAD TO STICK TO ONE SKINCARE BRAND, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Hands down, Paula’s Choice. I already use a number of her products in my routine and they have everything from cleansers, to treatments, to makeup. I love that they’re cruelty-free and their products are backed by science. The only downside is the crappy exchange rate, but they do ship to Canada and you can use Ebates. Their website also offers great skin care info and advice if you’re looking to learn more about what products you should be using for your skin type.
BEST SPOT TREATMENT?
I first learned about the Paula’s Choice Resist BHA-9 treatment from Ashley at makeuptia and it’s been a staple in my skincare collection ever since. I use this targeted BHA (salicylic acid) treatment at night as the last step in my skincare routine anytime I feel a pimple coming on or if I’ve got bumps or any areas of texture. I usually see results right away and seldom need more than one treatment. It’s a pricey product but definitely worth it.
WHAT’S ON YOUR SKINCARE WISH LIST?
I’ve been hearing great things about the Leahlani Mermaid Mask and am really curious to try it! I love supporting smaller brands and I’ve never tried anything from Leahlani Skincare. This superfood mask with raw honey, spirulina, chlorella, and a host of other good for you ingredients is suitable for all skin types and promises to unveil your skin’s “aloha glow”. Sign me up!
