For the past few years I’ve been focusing on downsizing the amount of ‘stuff’ I own. It started with creating a capsule wardrobe and progressed to anti-hauls and decluttering my makeup collection. We recently moved house and I’m blown away by the number of things that we were able to let go of with little effort. The shift towards a more minimalistic lifestyle has been really positive. Living with less has made me feel so much lighter. So when I saw a video in my YouTube feed about decluttering the ‘fantasy self’, I was all in (thanks Allison Anderson!).
Your fantasy self is an idealized version of you. It represents who you want to be or think you should be as opposed to your true, authentic self. The basic gist of it is, we end up holding on to all kinds of crap in order to support the lifestyle of our fantasy self without even realizing it. This idea was really intriguing to me and I thought it would be interesting to figure out who my fantasy self is and what she’s keeping in my house.
She’s a culinary whiz who loves to spend h
er time following intricate recipes from beautiful cookbooks.
Her free time is spent crafting and making rustic DIY home projects.
She wears high heels and a full face of makeup at every opportunity.
She hits the gym daily and has enough workout clothes to go weeks at a time without doing laundry.
A green thumb, she loves to garden and eat what she grows.
After work and my 1+ hour commute home, I’m too tired to cook most nights of the week so I rely on ready-made meals, slow cookers, or simple fare.
While I have a million projects pinned to my Pinterest board and a container full of supplies, I can’t remember the last time I finished a DIY project or craft. In fact, I’m really digging a minimalist aesthetic in my home and I have no desire to clutter it up with crafts or decor.
I love wearing makeup, but almost always stick to the same tried and true products (warm toned eyeshadow, anyone?) even though I have enough lipstick and eyeshadow palettes to last a lifetime.
I’m usually in boots or sneakers and only wear nude or black heels at work, but I own at least 5 pairs of fancy heels that I’ve worn maybe once or twice.
My workouts typically consist of yoga and some cardio a few days a week, even though my gym clothes take up the majority of my wardrobe.
I’m terrible at growing things and struggle to keep even the hardiest plants alive. I hate slugs and bugs. Succulents are my jam, but any plant more difficult than that is almost guaranteed to die under my care.
After calling out my fantasy self, I went back through my stuff and asked myself ‘who is this for’? I was able to get rid of an entire tote’s worth of things that were just taking up space. Some of these things moved with me from house to house over the years and never been touched. And my fantasy self? She’s outta here.
Do you have a fantasy self? What are you carrying around to satisfy her needs? Let me know in the comments below. Declutter that chick! You’ll thank me later.
